You are a migrant carer when you care for someone important to you and you both have a migrant background. This could be your partner, one of your children, your father or mother or someone else in your family or community. You care because that person is long-term ill, has a disability, mental health problems or is dealing with an addiction. Even if you mainly worry a lot or adapt often To the situation, you are a carer.
Informal care can mean anything: going along to appointments, helping with grooming, doing administration or supporting in the household. Even if you mainly worry a lot or adapt often To the situation, you are a carer.
You care for someone in your family. Or you are worried about someone. For example, because that person has been ill for a long time, has a disability, is addicted or has mental health problems. You help out of love. Or because you want to give something back. For example, for your father or mother. Sometimes you also feel responsible, because that is how it is in your culture or religion.
For many people from migrant backgrounds, it is normal for family to take care of each other. Therefore, asking for outside help is sometimes difficult. It can feel like you can't or don't want to do it yourself anymore. Often, one person in the family does most of it. Sharing care with others is not always easy. You may be afraid the rest of the family won't understand. And meanwhile, the care gets heavier and heavier. Many informal carers and their family members notice too late how heavy it actually is.
We are there for migrant carers living in the municipality of Nijmegen. We listen to your story. You can tell us what you find difficult. Together, we look at how you can keep caring for your neighbour. And how you can continue to take good care of yourself. Do you need help? Then we think along with you. And if necessary, we will put you in touch with another organisation. What we do for you is free.
We organise one or two activities a year, for example a pampering or discussion afternoon. An activity is all about you and other (migrant) informal carers for a while. You meet each other, can be there for each other and there is room for relaxation.
You can also join our cursussen en (thema)bijeenkomsten.
